In the Quilters' Book Club this month, we're reading The Goodbye Quilt by Susan Wiggs.  The main characters in the book are mom Linda Davis and her daughter Molly.  If you'd like to create a quilt block to represent Linda or Molly, here are some suggestions to get you started.  By clicking the quilt block name, you will be directed to the free pattern.

  1. Not always. Sometimes we need to learn on our own.

  2. I have not even shared all my mistakes with my children. I think it is more important to develop good communication skills and relationships and to help them reflect on experiences so they can make good judgments in the future. Sometimes it takes a mistake to learn and the lesson has more value.

  3. Agree with Karen and Julie - we can share, but our best help is to be there and help them through their experiences.

  4. I'm using the spool block to teach paper piecing next week. I wish there was a way to have your kids learn from your mistakes, but, they just aren't going to, most of the time. We didn't learn from our parents mistakes, either. Such is life.

  5. I wish there were ways, but I expect none of us ever listened or believed it wouldn't be different for us!

  6. I think human nature dictates we learn inn our own. We didn't listen to our parents. This behavior can be traced back to the begining of time in my opinion.

  7. I always enjoy quilts with the spool block! I wish life were so simple that our children could learn from our mistakes. I do feel I avoided some of the mistakes that my parents & grandparents made but then I made plenty anyway.

  9. Our children should be brought up to be as independent as posible and to make their own decisions. Support and guidance is all we can give, should they need it. Learning through mistake his hard but often the best way.

  10. I suppose the smart ones will do a little of both. I was a people watcher and some good things I learned and were what NOT to do. I tell my kids if you can learn from someone else's mistakes, it makes life a lot easier!
