Events in State Fair by Earlene Fowler, Part II

Calico Spools Quilt Block
This month, the Quilters' Book Club is reading State Fair: a Benni Harper Mystery by Earlene Fowler.  Do you love to quilt AND love to read?  Then I invite you to join us.  Each month, we read a book, discuss it through comments on my blog posts, and then make a quilt block to represent that book.

If you'd like to make a block to represent an event in the book, here are some suggestions to get you started.  More suggestions can be found in a previous blog post here.

  2. Sue I really enjoyed the black doll information. Thank you for your contributions to our list.
I have made dolls in the past, mostly church babies. My mother made these dolls to give to each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also crocheted me a baby doll that was about the size of a real baby. I treasure this doll and still have it though I gave away most of my other 20 plus dolls.

  3. I just found your site following a link in your email for Christmas stockings. I need inspiration there! I have made a few dolls when my kids were little. They are long gone though.

  4. The first doll I ever made was Diana in her Royal Wedding dress, for a British friend of mine who was a great Royal fan, she loved it, Helen

  5. My great grandmother, who died before my third birthday, made a "Raggedy Ann" type doll for me. I now have Grandma's treadle sewing machine.

  6. The closest I have ever come to making a doll was to put stuffing about the side of a softball in an antique pillow case and secured it with a ribbon. No face, no body, no arms or legs! Just pretty cross-stitching and lace that my great grandmother made on the bottom of the pillow case!

  7. I've never made a doll, or had a home made doll. I love looking at the cute dolls that Sharon V makes to go with all of her doll quilt exchanges. I don't even make doll quilts. Maybe if I ever have a granddaughter.....

  8. I have made several dolls for my granddaughters. I made an 18 inch and the clothes to go with it. I would use the same fabric to make a doll dress and make one to match or vice versa for the grand. Another grand got an 10 inch doll with all the clothes. I showed the smaller with clothes in our county fair. Judge liked also.

  9. My mom made my kids Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. I've made doll clothes, but never a doll.

  10. I never made a "doll" but did make teddy bears (no bending parts) for my great nieces out of some soft pink flannel. Then I did the bear a blanket out of the same material because it was winter after all and the bear needed something to tuck in when it hibernated. I heard that the girls took those everywhere. I had to put their initials on the bears so they wouldn't fight over which one was whose. All three girls are only a year or two apart in ages. Does that count? :)

  11. I used to make 25 inch tall Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls in white and black. I used to sell them. I have also made other dolls and also had dolls made for me.

  13. I enjoyed the information about black dolls, something I had not heard of before. I've never made a doll other than using a panel (sew around and stuff) for a Valentine bear when my daughter was little. I have done some doll clothes and some teddy bears as well.
I know from a local quilt show that doll making can be quite intricate!
