Dr Pepper Peanut Brittle and a Free Online Dr Pepper Cookbook

Broken Sugar Bowl Quilt Block

In honor of Dr Pepper drinking Mary Dell, member Kathy sent us a recipe for Dr Pepper Peanut Brittle that she adapted from the recipe found on the Homesick Texan blog.

Dr Pepper Peanut Brittle
1-1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup butter
1/4 cup Dr Pepper
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
2 cups roasted and salted peanuts, shelled
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2.  In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, butter, Dr Pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, and peanuts.  Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring often.
3.  When temperature reaches 290 degrees on a candy thermometer, remove from heat and stir in baking soda.  Mixture will foam up and double in size.
4.  Using a silicone spatula, thinly spread mixture on parchment-covered baking sheet.
5.  Allow to cool and harden.  Break into pieces.

Did you know that Dr Pepper does not have a period after Dr?  If you want more Dr Pepper recipes, there is a free, online cookbook called Cooking with Dr Pepper and 7Up.

Will you be joining us in September to read The Goodbye Quilt by Susan Wiggs?  Inquiring minds want to know!

  1. I got the audio book through inter-library loan, so I'm ready to go!

  2. I ordered it a few days ago from the depends on when it gets here.

Now to check out that recipe book!

  3. That very book is sitting in front of me, waiting for me to open and begin reading. For once, I am all caught up and ready to go.

  4. Driving to get it now!! How fast do we read? How often are the posts? I can't wait to start! Do you assign quilt blocks for the book how does that work? It all sounds like fun.

  5. Didn't get a chance to download it, yet. Thought I would do it a few days ago, but life got in the way. Will do it soon tho.

  6. When I was in high school those many years ago, I had a cookbook (pamphlet) using Dr. Pepper. I remember there was a recipe for apple muffins using it. It was very good and I've regretted that I lost that. I'm going to look for it!

  7. All set! Looking forward to the discussion and hoping to make at least one block this month!

  8. Picked up my book from the library a couple days ago. Ready to start reading!!

  9. Downloading my book today....Have enjoyed all of our readings so far.
Haven't started my quilt yet...have the material, but have several
projects to do before Christmas, including to large quilts...In January
will start my quilt with patterns from all the books we have read...I do
have the patterns for each book chosen.

  10. I don't have the patience to make peanut brittle. I'm a 'boil or off' kind of cook. Low and slow cooking just isn't my thing (hubby does that stuff). I don't think I'll be reading the Sept book. Nothing against you or the book, but, I'll be traveling half the month, and I'll be getting ready to travel before that. Just not enough time this month.

  11. I finished the book recently & LOVED it!

I love hearing from readers. Your comments make my day!
