Cats and Mice Quilt Block and Call the Midwife Season Two

Cats and Mice Quilt Block Pattern Information

Fog

The fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

by Carl Sandburg

When I leave the house at 7:30 Saturday morning for my sister's home, it is VERY FOGGY and everything is covered with hoarfrost.

It is the perfect weather to stay in front of a cozy fire with my sisters and watch Season Two of Call the Midwife

We watched Season One (6 hours long) together in January.  Season Two is eight episodes (8 hours) long.  We figure if we start earlier, we'll be fine.  We begin at 8:30 with a wonderful breakfast prepared by our host sister - bacon, hard-boiled eggs, fresh fruit, pirogues with applesauce, cheese (Farmhouse English Cheddar, Welsh Cheddar Cheese, and Irish Kerry Gold Blarney Castle Gouda-Style Cheese) and more.  Delicious!

As we watch and eat, we discover that the DVD set includes a 1-1/2 hour Christmas special in addition to the eight episodes.  The entire DVD is 555 minutes long - five minutes shy of ten hours!  (Not the eight hours we expected.)

We BRIEFLY stop after the first DVD to fill our bowls with a hearty and delicious Minestrone Soup that one sister made for lunch.  Then back to watch and eat!

I bring tea, banana nut bread, and veggies to sustain us throughout the day.

I can't find any Call the Midwife tea, but I bring PG Tips, English Breakfast Tea in a Red Telephone Booth tin, and two types of Downton Abbey tea - English Rose and Grantham Breakfast Blend.

After watching the second DVD, we briefly stop for scones (cranberry, blueberry, and currant) with lemon curd and Devonshire Cream.  Another sister picked up the scones fresh this morning from an amazing local bakery.  (I forget to take a photo of the accompanying lemon curd and homemade Devonshire Cream.)

The fog is still thick, and it begins to snow as we begin the third and final DVD.  I call it quits at 6:00 p.m. with two more episodes to go, so I can get home without having to contend with both darkness and fog.  (I live at higher altitude and have further to get home.)  My sisters finally finish at 8:00 p.m., two hours later.  I have seen these episodes so don't feel too bad about leaving early.

We are now caught up with both previous seasons and are ready for Season Three of Call the Midwife, which begins the end of this month!

Do you have another wonderful series to recommend to us for future all-day watching marathons?  Inquiring minds want to know!   By commenting, you'll be entering to win a copy of A Time for Peace (Quilts of Lancaster County) by Barbara Cameron.  If you are reading this via email, you must click on the title of my blog post to be able to comment and read the comments of others.  The winner will be announced on April 1.

  1. It sounds like you had a really great day, I wish my sister had similar watching taste. I have binge watched Call the Midwife, it is really good. The series I would recommend as a follow up is "From Larkrise to Candelford".

  9. I have never watched a TV series ... or even a movie series. I wonder if I could even sit still that long. My husband is sometimes interested in TV drama but it is all in Japanese and just background noise to me.

  10. Lovely quilt block and poetry! Your photo of the frost is amazing too! How wonderful that you and your sisters would get together and watch this all day, that is fab! I haven't seen this series myself but have been thinking about it. I will go check it out. Thanks!
    Hugs,

  11. I would also recommend LarkRise to Candleford and for a modern cozy mystery series Pie in the Sky. There are only 5 seasons of this but still very good and lots of great foods in it. The Irish P.M. is also a very good show but a bit older.

  12. What a great time together to "catch up". My daughter & I did a catch-up of Downton Abby last summer, every evening and got through 3 seasons. I had missed season 1&2; she had not gotten to season 3, It was a great time, a glass of wine and fun chatting about the episodes. She lives in Africa now, and missed season 4; so I will be searching for a "boxed set" for her birthday. We are both Call the Midwife fans as well. Sharing this blog with some friends on facebook today. Thanks for the win from February!
