Ladies' Aid Quilt Block

I found the pattern for this 8" Ladies' Aid block free on-line at: http://www.quilterscache.com/L/LadiesAidBlockBlock.html
In these diary entries, Mother and Hattie attend Ladies' Aid at Mrs. George's home.  Hattie is dating her son, Frank, and will eventually marry him.  Hattie and her 19-year-old brother, Howard, also attend a party given by Frank's sisters, Betty and Fannie.  Hattie is just learning how to drive, but Mother isn't ready to ride with her just yet!  My grandmother grew up on a farm near Olivet, Kansas, while my grandfather grew up on a farm in nearby Lebo, Kansas.

Tuesday, August 15, 1916 -
"Howard and I received invitations this morning for Betty's and Fannie's party Thursday night, and Mother and I received an invitation by phone from Mrs. George urging us over tomorrow.  I don't seem to be able to convince Mother that I am capable of taking her over in the car, however."

Wednesday, August 16, 1916 -
"Howard took us over to George's about two o'clock, and we certainly had a lovely time.  The house and porch were full of guests, and the barn yard was filled with cars and men.  The George girls are lovely, and I like their cousin so much!  I am sure looking forward to the party tomorrow night.  Frank was not receiving but was in evidence.

"I have been writing a letter to Bing and must now brush my hair and say my prayers as I'll have to get up early and will probably be out late tomorrow night."

Thursday, August 17, 1916 -
"As it is one A.M. Friday by the clock, I shall save details until later.  We certainly had a lovely time at the party.  That Lebo bunch is sure jolly.  Fannie and Betty had everything planned so nicely and, to the joy of all present, the lights didn't go out as they had feared.  Evi Jones sang some for us and so did Fannie, and Annagrace and Marie played.  They served maple nut ice cream and light and dark cake."

  1. Ooo! Hattie is our little socialite!!! I can just see her bopping around!!!

I've kept a journal for about 12 years. Some of my entries are shorter than Hattie's, but after reading your blog, I'm taking more time to write more!! What a treasure!

Another very cute, and bubbly block!! Are these colors that you think Hattie would have liked?

Can hardly wait until the next installment!!

  8. Hi I really like your idea on doing your blocks. This is a great story and it makes you want to read further. I have been keeping jurnals on and off for some time but I fear the one I have just started will be the hardest one of all. It is for a journey in lymphoma so we will see whether or not I can do this journal. You have a great blog and I have become a follower so I can continue to read the story....thanks for having me.

  13. the only time i kept a journal was in University, It was a requirement one semester, and intended as a self reflective exercise. I hated the process, so much i have not done it since. Often think a diary as a record would be a good idea though, especially noting the pleasure your grandmothers diary is giving to yourself and your readers

  14. I occasionally kept a diary during my teenage years but I just could keep it up. I often wish I had been able to because life changes so much, it would be good to look back and see how many challenges I worried about and then overcame.

  24. I have kept a journal since 2002. It began as a quilt journal, what I was working on and the problems or success with certain blocks. Sometimes I would note what I should have done with a pattern, and what I will do next time. Over the years family events, a news flash and weather comments made it in. I'll go back and read to research an old UFO when it is nearing completion...or refresh my memory as to who attended last years BBQ.
More than you really wanted to know..my journal gets a little wordy sometimes, too!

I know that I should keep a journal, but I never have. I feel like it'd be great for my future grandkids to have, but on the other hand, all the things I feel the need to write in a journal are things I wouldn't want anyone else to read. Do you know what I mean. I do kind of use my blog and Facebook to keep a record of events and my kids' milestones, which is something, I guess!

I eventually made a quilt with the blocks and I use it as my summer bed quilt. I have blocks from the US and Canada and one from a fellow named Richard. 147. I sort of keep a journal. I use a book like calendar. I make columns on each page & write a year at the top of each column so I can use it for 3 or 4 years. In my journal I jot very brief notations - the temp, precipitation, what exercise I did that day, garden happenings & whatever else I did but very briefly: lunch with Kim, annual MD, etc......

Great giveaway - thanks for the chance to win.

  153. I always start one, usually when I'm upset about something, and then afterwards, I go back and tear out the pages I wrote and trash them. I feel better writing them, but I'd never want them to fall into the hands of some innocent bystander later.

  186. What a totally awesome quilt concept. Plus what a treasure to have her journal (and I'm guessing some of her quilts)! I kept a journal until I was married--don't know why I stopped other than things turned upside-down and I never got back to that ...

  187. Years ago I kept a journal, but decided it was too personal to risk having my family find, so I destroyed it! When I was a teen, I kept a diary and my Mom made me burn it when I put in an entry about my first kiss when I was in the 8th grade! I sure do wish I could read it now all these many years later! I am currently keeping a spiritual journal and doubt that I will leave it around for anyone to read.

    ReplyDelete
  188. I know I had one when I was younger, but I don't think I still have it and I didn't kept it for a very long time...

  195. During one of the worst times of my life, I started keeping a journal. I had lost my mother and my step father (of 30+ years) within a year of each other AND my extended family were pushing me over the edge. My journal allowed me to see how God was healing me everyday and making me a little stronger.
Truly believe it was one of the things that turned that moment around for me.

  196. Those journal entries are so fun to read. I'm sure you treasure them. I've tried many times to keep a journal and I have never done very well.

  197. I've always struggled to keep a journal, because I feel like I should, but I'm really bad at it. This last Christmas I asked my family for a One Line a Day journal, thinking that I could keep up if it was just one line per day, but even with that I'm falling behind. :( Thanks for the giveaway!
