When my daughter-in-law was visiting in January to attend her baby shower, she chose a Happy Town panel as the center of my grandson's first quilt. I ordered the panel from Fat Quarter Shop: www.fatquartershop.com. It was designed by Jacquelynne Steves of The Noble Wife for Henry Glass Fabrics. Doesn't it look like a fun play quilt for a little boy? I can just imagine him playing with cars and trucks on it.
The panel came with the red inner border. I trimmed the border down to 1-1/4" finished and then added a 2-1/2" green border and a 3-1/2" blue border.
My daughter-in-law decided that she wanted horizontal strips of fabric in various widths for the back of the quilt. We looked online at Hawthorne Threads www.hawthornethreads.com and (with the helpful input of another daughter-in-law) ordered some bright, geometric prints in various colors and shapes. I used these fabrics for the back as well as the green and blue front borders. The green and white vertical strips of fabric on the sides will be only half as wide as they are now. I made the back wider than the front for quilting and then will trim them evenly before putting on the binding.

This reminds me very much of a play-pen quilt (called a "pad")I made with applique and embroidery houses and other buildings, roads and train tracks and all that stuff to play on. I don't think they even have play-pens these days. Any little guy id going to have fun with that!
ReplyDeleteI remember play pens! They have something very similar now called a pack 'n play. I thought my daughter-in-law chose a fun panel for this quilt.

I raised three boys, so I can hear those little boy motor sounds, too, Doniene!
DeleteWonderful print for a play quilt! I love "The Keeping Quilt" and actually met the author and saw the original quilt here in Portland years ago. She signed my book and drew a little quilting angel.
ReplyDeleteBeth, how wonderful for you! I would absolutely love to meet Patricia Polacco. She's one of my very favorite authors.
DeleteWhat a fun quilt. But if they don't have play pens where do you put an active baby who can already crawl and who needs to be somewhere safe while Mom cooks supper or does other things that could be dangerous?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Stella, it seems to me that the Pack 'n Play that is in use now by young moms is very similar to our play pens. I agree with you. An active baby needs to be kept in a safe place sometimes!
DeleteVery cute!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cheryl. It was fun to make.
DeleteThat is a great quilt for a little boy!! I'm sure he will love it for years to come.
ReplyDeleteWhen his mom picked out the center panel, I thought it was perfect for a little boy, too. I think he'll have a lot of fun with it.
DeleteWhat a cute quilt and I've got some Happy Town fabrics I working with also!
