September House Quilt Block

“Septem” means “seven” in Latin.  September was the seventh month of the old Roman calendar, which had only ten months and which began in the spring in March.

This 12"  September House quilt block is part of my Calendar of Houses Bee Quilt.  A friend and I organized this on-line bee a couple of years ago after being members of two previous on-line bees.

There were thirteen of us in the bee - from the United States as well as England and New Zealand.  Every month, each of us made a block for a member and a different member made a block for us.  The house design was to represent that month.  One member did not send me a block, so I made this one for my quilt.

September

The breezes taste

     Of apple peel.
The air is full
     Of smells to feel –

Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Drying grass,
New books and blackboard
     Chalk in class.

The bee, his hive
     Well-honeyed, hums
While Mother cuts
     Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
     With suds, the days
Are polished with
     A morning haze.

Glazed Apples and Sausage
1 pound smoked, fully cooked kielbasa
6 apples, sliced but not peeled
½ cup apple juice
½ cup maple syrup
½ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

1.  Slice the kielbasa into 1/2” slices.  Brown the sausage in a 10-inch frying pan or electric skillet.
2.  Add the apples, apple juice, maple syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon.  Stir well and put the lid on the skillet.  Simmer the mixture until the apples are tender.
3.  If necessary, remove the lid and cook some of the liquid down so that you have a nice glaze.

2500 varieties of apples are grown in the United States, with 100 varieties being grown commercially.  The apple variety “Delicious” is the most widely grown in the United States.  7500 varieties of apples are grown throughout the world.

  1. First off Susan where does one find the pattern for these darling house blocks! My daughter, an elementary school teacher decorates her class room and I bet would love this!

I also plan to try that apple/sausage recipe. Kielbasa is a favorite family.
