July Picnic Basket Quilt Block

This July Picnic Basket block is part of my Wooly Basket Calendar Quilt.  The pattern is from the Starry Pines Pattern Company: http://starrypinespatterncompany.com/spindex2.html

I used wool for the hand-appliqued basket, cotton flannel for the background fabric, and black perle cotton for the embroidery.

July used to be called Quintilis, meaning the fifth month.  It was renamed July by the Roman Senate in honor of Julius Caesar, who was born during that month.  It is one of seven months with a length of 31 days.

I always like summer
best
you can eat fresh corn
from daddy's garden
and okra
and greens
and cabbage
and lots of
barbecue
and buttermilk
and homemade ice cream
at the church picnic
and listen to
gospel music
outside
at the church
homecoming
and go to the mountains with
your grandmother
and go barefooted
and be warm
all the time
not only when you go to bed
and sleep

Picnic Table
The hot dogs, the mustard,
The paper plates, the ketchup,
The napkins, potato chips,
The lemonade,
The chocolate cake and ice cream -
All gone.
But under the apple tree
The table waits
For next time.
