May Day Baskets and Surprises

Happy May Day!

The first May basket is part of my Wooly Basket Calendar Quilt.  The pattern is from the Starry Pines Pattern Company.

I used wool for the hand-appliqued basket, cotton flannel for the background fabric, and black perle cotton for the embroidery.

The second May Day basket was a wonderful surprise left on my classroom door while I was away working with the kindergarteners.

The third May Day basket was another delightful surprise left on my desk.

Children from a second grade classroom created and SECRETLY delivered May baskets to every teacher at our school.  What a joy it was to see those May baskets!

I can't tell you how wonderful it is to work at
a school with teachers who not only teach our students reading, writing, math, science, and social studies - but also make the time to teach them the importance of bringing joy to others.  What a wonderful tradition!  I feel so blessed!

I can remember making May Day baskets like these when I was a girl in Kansas.  We'd leave them on neighbors' door knobs, ring the doorbell, and run!!!

May Day is a wonderful tradition that needs to be carried on and continued.  You can read about my grandmother's May Day, 1916 style here.

What about you?  How did/do you celebrate May Day?  Please answer in the comments section below.  Remember, if you are reading this in email, you must click through to my blog to be able to comment or to see the comments of others.

And for all of you in the Quilter's Book Club, we have a winner!  My husband drew the name of Cheryl's Teapots2Quilting as the winner of Marie Bostwick's latest book Between Heaven and Texas.  Cheryl, send me your mailing address at starwoodquilter@gmail.com, so I can mail the book to you.  Congratulations!

Here's one final May Day surprise I received:

Happy Snowy May Day to you from Colorado!

  2. Yes, and it is nice to work at a school where teachers are appreciated.
Thanks for the memories. I remember making those baskets too, out of two colors of construction paper, folded, sliced, and woven together. (I don't think any teacher of mine got one but the neighbors did).
My dog, Nikko, says Cheryl is a great pick.
Your snow hit our news ... rather better to get the news than the real thing!

  3. May 1 is my parents' wedding anniversary. Today they've been married for 60 years. We delivered a wedding flower arch to their front steps this afternoon. They were tickled pink! Afterwards we went out for a celebratory dinner. This Sunday will be a bigger celebration.

  4. Oh My Gosh! I won?!? How cool! I'll email you my info. May Day is my mother-in-law's birthday, so, we celebrate it by celebrating her 'day' instead.

  5. Maybe next year, I'll make some May baskets and pass them around the neighborhood, but I wonder how many remember what they are.
