Wedding Ring Author's Note to the Quilters' Book Club

The paperback version just re-released in May.

Here's a note I received this morning from Wedding Ring author, Emily Richards:

"Just to let you know that the hardcover, which you picture, is no longer available.  But the book is available to purchase, not just get at the library these days.  It was re-released in May, with a new cover and a great price in trade paperback.  If your readers can't find it in their local bookstore, it's available through these links.  (And as you know, book sales make publishers take notice and publish more books, as well as supporting authors to write more.)"

Emilie has also offered to participate in our discussion this month on her book!  I think having the author participate in past discussions has added greatly to our book club, don't you?  So either check the book out of your library or purchase the paperback from your local bookstore or online.  Start reading and join the Quilters' Book Club in our read and quilt along!

Here is the summary of Wedding Ring from Amazon:

"Three generations of women discover the healing gift of family, memories, and love.Needing time to contemplate her troubled marriage, Tessa MacRae agrees to spend the summer helping her mother and grandmother clean out the family home in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. But the three women have never been close. Helen, the family matriarch, is domineering and sharp-tongued. Nancy,Tessa's mother, appears to be little more than a social climber. And Tessa herself is in turmoil following a family tragedy that has affected them all.  Now, with the gift of time, Tessa's eyes are opened, and she begins to see her mother and grandmother for the flawed but courageous women they are. As she restores a vintage wedding ring quilt pieced by her grandmother and quilted by her mother, the secrets that have shadowed their lives unfold at last. And each woman discovers that sometimes you have to clean house to find the things you thought were lost forever."

  1. I can't believe that I am your first commenter but hey - someone gets to be first..LOL I am in the process on embarking of making 4 wedding quilts this summer- a friend, a brother in law and a niece and a nephew. They are not the first wedding quilts that I have made- I have made bed sized wedding quilts and some couch quilts for wedding gifts for friends. I have never made the wedding ring pattern but I have made spider web designs, a bargello pattern called Melinda's Heart, and a twisted log cabin. This year I have been asked to make a signature quilt, and I have chosen 2 of the three other quilt patterns- one is a heart pattern by Buggy Barn and another is a large ship anchor because they are both into boats and fishing. The last one is a bit of enigma but it may end up being a pattern called Rock Candy.. I have made Ricky Tims convergence pattern for throw sized quilts.. Some of the quilts have taken a long time and others not so long. I machine piece and quilt everything myself. I don't expect to have them all ready for the weddings ( one of them is in October) except for the signature blocks for the first wedding. I will piece those signature blocks together after the wedding. It will one busy quilting summer.

  2. I am so slow that most wedding quilts turn out to be anniversary quilts in the end. Two were "stack and whack" style, although I marked and cut the pieces one-by-one. One was six repeats and the other eight. Those were fun to do. One was a Hawaiian sampler that actually was displayed at the wedding (in Hawaii). others were so late I wonder if they could be called "wedding quilts" at all.
Latest wedding quilt has been interrupted for a baby quilt ... sigh! I'll never get caught up.

  3. It took me 7 yrs to complete my daughter's wedding quilt. It was Lovers Links done in cranberry reds with a cream background. Collected FQ's of the reds and was working full-time! Of course shortly after I gave it to them they changed the theme/colours for their bedroom! lol
I am rereading the Wedding Ring. Love her books.

  5. First of all Congrats ANudge on winning!

Secondly, I got my book yesterday from Amazon and this time bought the kindle version. I had it all read by the time I went to bed! There are parts in it that struck a chord with me (and some events in my past) and I cried through parts, laughed through others.

I haven't made a wedding quilt and probably won't but that doesn't stop me from admiring those who do and the quilts they make. My machine likes wall hanging sizes and in an efficiency apartment that is a good size for me to make. It gets fun sandwiching my projects on a card table... LOL.

I just got back from the International Quilt Show in Chicago and I felt just like some of those ladies that were seeing Tessa's grandmothers quilts hanging up. The testimonials about how much the quilts meant to the recipients was priceless and I think more people should let the quilters know how much they appreciate their work. not just at the time of giving but later on after that "glow" of getting the quilt has worn off a bit.

  6. I haven't made a wedding quilt. I made 26 wedding ring place mats for son's rehearsal dinner. I took a couple months as I was a full time teacher. I machine embroidered their names and wedding date inside the oval. My husband's grandmother made us a quilt when we got married. I believe it was stitched by hand. It was a nine patch and I used it on the bed. I have it stored in the closet now. I had to add some patches to it. I didn't 'know' you shouldn't use and wash!!
Just ordered the book from library; I have read but need to refresh my memory.

  7. I am the first quilter (not the first seamstress) in my family. What coverlets we had (only two layers of material) we used to death and none survive. I did make a quilt for my daughter's 35th birthday. It took me two years and was a Beth Ferrier BOM. I was a bit late - a year in getting it to her, but she's very proud of it and has it hanging in her family room.

  8. I have not made a wedding quilt. Our two sons were married before I really got into quilting. At that time I made them each counted cross stitch wall hangings. Now it's all about quilting for me and I've made several dozen quilts since I jumped in with both feet about the time the grandchildren started arriving.

  9. I made the Double Wedding Ring for my husband. He picked out the fabrics at the quilt shop. He does not like them in scrappy so he chose to have solid arcs. I prefer scrappy, so, I am going to make myself one in scrappy. LOL! I have also made two "Monet's Wedding Rings" by Judy Martin for two different nephews. First one of those two took two weeks to make from beginning to end..very quick pattern. My husbands took 3 years because I kept putting it down. I also hand quilted the entire 72 rings quilt and it has the scalloped edges with the points too. It was massive.

  10. i have used deborah cohen's trinity celtic knot work 3 times for wedding quilts. it is perfect for them as that is what deborah had in mind when she designed it--a cord of 3 strands is not easily broken, the groom, bride and God......perfect! it is an EASY pattern to do and boy howdy does it have alot of bang for the buck!

i also took the central knot work and made a matching baby quilt for my daughter. she loved having that for the crib in her room that matched her quilt on her bed when the baby was still in their room.

  11. Adding this for fun. I participated in an anthology that comes out sometime before Christmas called The Christmas Wedding Quilt. Three authors plotted and planned it, and my novella, Let It Snow, introduces the story. I haven't heard anything about pub date, but I'm assuming it will be out in October or November. We had fun planning this one.

So glad you're reading Wedding Ring. I hope to write a sixth book in the series before too long.

    1. The one & only Wedding Ring quilt I ever made was for a customer. It took me a month to piece it & about 6 months to quilt. All by hand.
      Won't be doing that again.
But I very much enjoy seeing others make them. All so different, depending on fabric choices.

  14. I've never made a wedding quilt & probably never will. I'm waaaay to slow in finishing my projects.

I wanted to share a mistake I recently made that led to a wonderful discovery. I was in the process of purchasing all of the books for our reading list & while at Target I thought I had discovered one of the books I needed to purchase. I didn't have the list with me but I remembered Emilie Richards was one of the authors & The Lover's Knot was a book on the list. I purchased Lover's Knot by Emilie Richards & upon returning home was frustrated to find I had purchased the wrong book. What a blessing!!! I love, love, loved the book & I can't wait to read the rest of the books in The Shenandoah Album Novel collection. I hope you all will read this book since I know you will thoroughly enjoy the read.

  15. Yes, I was asked to make a Wedding Quilt for a Jewish wedding about 10 years ago (I think it is called a Chuppah). The bride-to-be and I chose the blocks, based on her life and her future husband's being non-Jewish. It was very interesting and I enjoyed working on it. I've never made a Wedding Ring quilt, but maybe someday!? I finished re-reading the book last night. (I go thru several books a month). That is really good news from the Author about a new book coming out in this series soon!!

  16. I have never made a Wedding Quilt, yet I have always wanted to, so this gives me the opportunity to start one for me and hubby. Our 31st anniversary will be in December and while it will not be a milestone, it would be great to have the quilt completed by then.

  17. I have never made a wedding quilt. Having a deadline is difficult. I guess an anniversary quilt would be a good idea like some have mentioned!

  18. Being a relative newbie quilter, I haven't made a wedding quilt to date, nor did we receive one when we married 35 years ago. As a child, I learned knitting, crocheting and embroidery, but did not truly delve into quilting until a few years ago. I'm having a blast! So....maybe there will be a wedding quilt in the future.
