Quilters' Book Club March Selection - A Single Thread

Do you love to quilt AND love to read?  I invite you to join the free, online Quilters' Book Club.  Each month, we read a book, discuss it through comments on my blog posts, and then make a quilt block to represent that book.  I research several potential blocks to go with the book's themes, setting, main characters, and events.  And I find the patterns free on the internet, making it easy for everyone to access.  Each member can choose the block or blocks they'd like to make.  I'll also make sure each book is available on Kindle since so many people use that format for reading.

To join, become a follower of my blog so you won't miss any blog post.  Leave a comment, letting us know you'd like to join.  That's it!  To make it super convenient, you can also sign up for my posts to be delivered right to you via email.

Our book to read and discuss during March 2013 is A Single Thread by Marie Bostwick.  It's the first book in her Cobbled Court Quilts Series.

"It's a long way from Fort Worth, Texas, to New Bern, Connecticut, yet it only takes a day in the charming Yankee town to make Evelyn Dixon realise she's found her new home. The abrupt end of her marriage was Evelyn's wake-up call to get busy chasing her dream of opening a quilt shop. Finding a store front is easy enough; starting a new life isn't. Little does Evelyn imagine it will bring a trio like Abigail Burgess, her niece Liza, and Margot Matthews through her door.Troubled and angry after her mother's death, Liza threatens to embarrass her Aunt Abigail all over town unless she joins her for quilting classes. A victim of downsizing at the peak of her career, Margot hopes an event hosted by the quilt shop could be a great chance to network - and keep from dying of boredom...As they stitch their unique creations, Evelyn, Abigail, Liza, and Margot form a sisterhood they never sought - but one that they'll be grateful for when the unexpected provides a poignant reminder of the single thread that binds us all."

Get a copy of A Single Thread from your local library and join us!  If you'd like to learn more about the author, Marie Bostwick, her website is:  http://mariebostwick.com/

    1. Diane, I'm glad that you've got some time for reading tonight. I'm hoping, too, that more people will participate this time. I think they will! It takes some time to get new things off the ground, but I've had a lot of fun with the book club so far.

  3. I read this book when I found it/purchased it at Walmart when it was new. It's been awhile. I don't have the book anymore, and so I plan to sit this one out. I will be keeping up with your blog and the comments though. Enjoy!

  4. I am sooooooo excited to part of this group!!! As I said before I ordered the book and it should be in soon! I've even decided the fabrics and layouts for the quilt. I'm going to do red work blocks, so I will pick something about the main character to stitch! I was gifted some fabric from a friend who moved, and what a great way to use some of it for a sal with fellow quilters! I appreciate all your hard work in putting this together! I'm so looking forward to the discussion!!! I will also read last month's book and put in my "two cents worth" when I finish!!

    Have a blessed day!

    1. Doniene, we're so happy that you're part of the book club. And I absolutely love the idea of redwork blocks! If you see any free patterns online for redwork that would go with our monthly books, please let us know. Others might be interested in making redwork blocks, too. I think you'll enjoy The Persian Pickle Club from last month, and you are always encouraged to comment on any book, even if it's not that month's selection.

    2. Doniene, what a lovely idea for you quilt. After reading the Persian Pickle Club, it has made me want to share fabrics with some friends in a project. With all the beautiful fabrics available to purchase today, we are spoilt for choice, but how lovely to have a special quilt to remind us of friends.

  5. I just ordered this one from Amazon. It had an excerpt from the book and I can tell from the few pages I read that this is my kind of book. Alas, my library doesn't have it in downloadable form, my preferred method.

    2. Thanks, Mama T. I love writing them. I'm working on #6 right now, should be out in spring of 2014. But be sure to pick up a copy of BETWEEN HEAVEN AND TEXAS when it comes out on April 30. It's a prequel to the series, focuses on Mary Dell. It's a little different than the other books but I think you'll love it.

    1. Welcome to the group! I would first check and see if your local library has the books. If not, you could try ordering the book from Amazon.com. They offer both new and used copies of books. I'm sorry, but there is no Farmer's Daughter book. It is a quilt I made using patterns from several sources. I have written a blog post about each block and always state the pattern source.

  11. Hello All--I picked up "A Single Thread" at the library yesterday and got the first four chapters read so far. I can identify with the main character already. I know I'm really going to enjoy it.

    1. Bonnie, I think Marie Bostwick is a good writer. I'm rereading the book a second time since I read the book awhile ago. I'm putting a little sticky note on certain pages so I'm better prepared for our discussion. It's so hard to go back and try to find a particular passage if you don't do this! (Don't ask me how I know!)

    2. I finished the book yesterday morning. I enjoyed it. I won't say anymore until you post your discussion points. The book I checked out from my library had some discussion questions at the end of it.

    3. Bonnie, I also found some discussion questions on Marie's website. I wonder if they're the same ones.

    4. I don't know. Would you like me to scan you a page or two of the questions?

    5. That would be great, Bonnie. Thank you.

  14. I finished the book in two days. It is a great story of courage and faith, and an example of how love, devotion and deep friendship can develop among individuals if they will just reach out to each other. Loved it.
