I found the pattern for this 8" Ladies' Aid block free on-line at: http://www.quilterscache.com/L/LadiesAidBlockBlock.html
In these diary entries, Mother and Hattie attend Ladies' Aid at Mrs. George's home. Hattie is dating her son, Frank, and will eventually marry him. Hattie and her 19-year-old brother, Howard, also attend a party given by Frank's sisters, Betty and Fannie. Hattie is just learning how to drive, but Mother isn't ready to ride with her just yet! My grandmother grew up on a farm near Olivet, Kansas, while my grandfather grew up on a farm in nearby Lebo, Kansas.
Tuesday, August 15, 1916 -
"Howard and I received invitations this morning for Betty's and Fannie's party Thursday night, and Mother and I received an invitation by phone from Mrs. George urging us over tomorrow. I don't seem to be able to convince Mother that I am capable of taking her over in the car, however."
Wednesday, August 16, 1916 -
"Howard took us over to George's about two o'clock, and we certainly had a lovely time. The house and porch were full of guests, and the barn yard was filled with cars and men. The George girls are lovely, and I like their cousin so much! I am sure looking forward to the party tomorrow night. Frank was not receiving but was in evidence.
"I have been writing a letter to Bing and must now brush my hair and say my prayers as I'll have to get up early and will probably be out late tomorrow night."
Thursday, August 17, 1916 -
"As it is one A.M. Friday by the clock, I shall save details until later. We certainly had a lovely time at the party. That Lebo bunch is sure jolly. Fannie and Betty had everything planned so nicely and, to the joy of all present, the lights didn't go out as they had feared. Evi Jones sang some for us and so did Fannie, and Annagrace and Marie played. They served maple nut ice cream and light and dark cake."

ReplyDeleteI do keep a quilt journal and a garden journal.
Happy quilting!
New follower. I have had a diary in the past, I tended to get too lengthy, and didn't keep it up. But it's a fun way to quickly spend time. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI tried keeping a journal, but it only lasted about three days.
ReplyDeleteI used to keep one when I was younger but had a lot of sisters who would steal it and raed it so I haven't kept one since! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI kept a diary when I was about 12, I think it is an excellent idea to keep a quilting diary.

ReplyDeleteJust keep a gratitude journal each day - things I'm grateful for - it's such a good thing to do - keeps my attitude in the right place. Thank you for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great block and to have your Grandmother's diary, what a treasure! I have some pictures of my Dad's family going back to the 1900's but no diarys. I kept a diary when I was a teenager but not since then. Maybe I should start?

I keep a journal and love to go back and read about all the funny things my kids have said. Just the other day I read my journal from last year when my then three year old daughter yelled, "Dinner's done!" When the fire alarm went off. I did not realize that my cooking sets off the fire alarm that often!
ReplyDeleteI used to keep a diary when I was just out of high school. I guess I'm not sure why I never kept up with it though. Using your blog to honor your grandmother is a WONDERFUL idea and what a way to honor your grandmother. I'm sure she would be very proud and honored to be remembered in such a special way. I became a follower because I want to see where this journey takes you. And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Ladies Aid Quilt block -- gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI am a big journaler--keeping a regular one for dreams and exposition, then writing a line a day on an index card so I can compare year to year at a glance (yup, saw it on Pinterest--great way to mini-journal without sitting down to write a whole page!)
ReplyDeleteNo, I have never kept a diary or journal - writing has never really been my thing!!
ReplyDeleteWould love to win your giveaway!
No, I've never kept a dairy or journal. Blogging might be as close as I'll ever get. T' a new follower. Thanks for joining in the Blog Hop Party Giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThe only journal I've ever kept was a prayer journal that I bought when I sponsored my son's girlfriend to the Walk to Emmaus retreat (a Christian retreat similar to Cursillo or Tres Dias in some other religions). It's a 4 day retreat, and I bought a lovely leather-bound journal and wrote throughout those 4 days that she was gone, about my prayers for her and her future. I then gave her the journal at the closing ceremony along with my wishes that she would take it and continue to journal her prayer life going forward. It was a great experience :)
ReplyDeleteMy life isn't as exciting as Hattie's. I've kept journal here and there, but I always wondered if something happened to me, who would read them. Worse yet, they would chunk them in the trashcan due to my life in Dullsville. Hattie's stories though are what Hollywood films are made of. So glad she wrote down her thoughts!
ReplyDeleteI have never kept a journal or diary thought about but talked self out of it.I am a huge fan of the website with the block ladies aid block I actually have learned quilting from her site. thank-you for the give away chance and good luck all.Beckt

ReplyDeleteI'm a sporadic journal keeper and it is interesting to read over them later.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win this prize. I have never kept a journal of any kind. I just joined a quilt guild and one of the ladies there encourages us all to keep a journal of our quilts we make. Maybe that will be my new goal.
ReplyDeleteFun giveaway! I've kept a diary/journal off and on. I wrote a LOT when I was a kid and in early college but then I started feeling self conscious about all my notebooks. What happens if someone found them and read all of my thoughts? I stopped writing for awhile and then picked it up again and then dropped it again... recently I've been feeling the urge to put pen to paper. Maybe it's time! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting a giveaway!
I have written a journal off and on over the years. I like interesting journal books so I have a mishmash or completed journals, that I'll have to put in a box in the attic! It never occurred to me that someone may use my words as inspiration for a quilt one day...this is a lovely project.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for a quilt! I kept a journal...until my mother read it. Now my blog is pretty much my journal. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI don't keep a journal, but I'm learning to document the quilts I make. Otherwise when someone asks about a quilt, it's hard to remember all the details.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog have been a follower for awhile now. I use to keep a diary...Now I keep a blog :) Thanks for hosting a giveaway, and for a chance to win :)
ReplyDeleteI have bought several beautiful journals with excellent intention of tracking my children for their later amusement but seems I am not good at keeping them up. My 8-year-olds is about blank...
ReplyDeleteHi, I kept one when I was younger but gave up on it when my life got to crazy to keep up. I should start again thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI've tried a few times to keep a journal, but I've never stuck with it for longer than a week or two before it ended up feeling like a chore. Sometimes I wish I had.
ReplyDeleteI kept a journal as a teenager. Sometimes when my kids tell me, "Mom, you just don't understand," or "it was so different when you were young," I just pull out my journal and show them I wasn't always 45! Sometimes I DO understand what they're going through! I love seeing the looks on their faces when they read some situations/experiences are almost identical to what I went through! Makes me laugh!!! :) Thanks for the opportunity to win such a great giveaway!!! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! I have never kept a diary or journal. :)

I don't keep a journal but I did have a diary when I was about 10 years old and it had a little gold key to lock it. Unfortunately, my sister could pick the lock so I had no secrets from her.
ReplyDeleteI've kept a journal on and off for several years. Then I discovered blogging and pretty much consider my blog a journal but with pictures. I really enjoy writing. Thanks for participating in the blog hop party. And thanks for the great prize!
